The next Indaba, the fourth in a series of interdisciplinary workshops organized by the Structural Chemistry Commission of the International Union of Crystallography, will take place over the period:

17-22 August 2003

The venue, as before will be:

Skukuza, in the Kruger National Park, South Africa

ECM-21 website This Indaba is planned as a satellite meeting of ECM-21, the 21st meeting of the European Crystallographic Association which will be held in Durban, South Africa from 24 to 29 August 2003

The theme of the workshop is Patterns in Nature and covers topics such as Symmetries, Hidden or Broken Symmetries, Structural Relationships, Aperiodic Crystals, Incommensurate Structures, Periodic relationships amongst atoms, nuclides and homologous series, Fractals, Chaos, Critical Phenomena, Numerical Patterns, etc.

Participation is unrestricted except for a limitation on the numbers due to the nature of the venue which can accommodate only 120 delegates. Preference will be given to presenters of original research and to students.

A limited number of IUCr-sponsored bursaries will be available for students and other young scientists, who are invited to apply for support, preferably by e-mail, with the recommendation of a supervisor or a senior colleague, to the Secretariat (thereza@technoscene.co.za). A preliminary registration including an abstract title must first be submitted (see Registration) and your registration number (supplied by the Secretariat on recept of the preliminary registration) should be quoted on all correspondence. Any support granted will be conditional on the acceptance by the Organising Committee of the abstract submitted by the delegate (see Submission of Abstracts). Early submission of abstracts is encouraged for those delegates seeking support.

A circular giving brief details of Indaba IV is available for download in either PDF or MSWord format.
